NEW MUSIC EVERY DAY
Monday, 26 March 2018
this weekend has been...
a lot of just hand copying and scanning my solo soprano piece for Amber! I am still dissatisfied with the quality of the scan, so I may have to seek out alternative solutions!
string quartet no.6 movement 1
This is a piece that will deal with the nature of changes, and particularly changes in nature.
Mvt 1 is v slow and contemplative, grab a jazz cigarette and enjoy

Rainy Morning Melody
This is an arrangement of a tune by Alice Chance, from the last month of music. I wanted to exercise some video game nostalgia, so I chose some bitcrushed samples and a NES sampler that I've been using for a while. Enjoy!

a piece for soprano clarinet and piano
still figuring things out... this is for one of the forum readings, so I have slightly more time than other pieces but... still practically no time.

Final version (?) of the excerpted string 4tet no.5
This one contains some polyrhythmic action, players taking the earbuds of separate metronomes and playing along with them.

not sure what this is
I wrote a sketch today, with a mix of texts from different sources. A couple lines from DH Lawrence, then a few from the historical letters of Alice Mitchell and Freda Ward (two lady lovers in Memphis in the 1800s, who then were forcibly separated by their families... there's more to this story, but you can look it up yourselves if you're so inclined)
I'm hearing a chamber ensemble of some kind when I listen to this. For two voices.

still needs dynamics! bleh!
Here's my CPP ensemble piece! It has a lot of boxes and arrows, so midi is a no go, but here's the score!
Now I need to go work on my patch for electronic music! agh!

String Quartet no5 update, still not final
Link Here https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mbQIq2YAXXbXNZa3F6gmEdxi9nMKrkqx/view?usp=sharing
I rewrote a substantial amount of it. The stuff I took out is going to end up in the final version... consider this something like a 'first movement,' although the finished product is probably going to be quite different again.

happy little piano phase
or something?
I made a little phase thing-- I think it would be better live, more interesting? Maybe even different instruments would be better, like two violins? ten minutes of the same 18 eighth notes over and over again. Not sure how I feel about it, seems almost too simple. But I also like it.

humming song 2
another little humming song that was stuck in my head-- very similar to the first in some ways. I always think the music I write when I have a migraine comes out confused, so I'm curious to see how this sounds when I feel normal again.

telephone sounds
today I made a patch that makes telephone dialing noises when you press numbers on your keyboard!
Wish I had a third movement of telephone piece instead, but there ya go.
I also learned that you can export an image of a patch very easily from max itself and you don't actually have to drive yourself nuts taking screenshots.

Trombones like always
telephone piece!
Today I was finally ripped out of my warm cocoon of denial.
So I finally put in some work on a high-stress project instead of continuing to just dork around with cabaret. Here's the second movement of my telephone piece I'm working on with/for Jon Clancy.
The gimmick of this piece is that there's a wired telephone onstage that people can call. This would be hard to do with mobiles.
PLEASE if anybody has comments like "this game clearly doesn't work and here's why" PLEASE TELL ME because I'm not a composer of games normally, this is new for me.
Thanks friends.

more cabaret!
Here's a couple of first pages of things I'm working on related to the same cabaret- the first is a cheesy orchestral intro, the second is the first page of a song!

a rough BUT COMPLETE draft of a cabaret song!
context:
The singer is a statue who has been wished into life by her creator and she's not too excited about the life the sculptor has imagined for her...
Need to tweak some of who's playing what when, and please be warned this music is cheesy, but not as cheesy as the MIDI MAKES IT. The midi is so cheesy.

Bird Songs - for Piano
Score HERE
This is a piece for performance at a rather nationalistic Australian event, related specifically to the soldiers who died in World War 1. I was asked to compose the piece as a sort-of elegy, and I felt that I should write miniatures based on sketches (and some finished pieces) that I made, related to birds and sky.
As relates to Month of Music, I finished the set today! So yay to that, but also, my piece today was the second movement, which was the only thing I wrote entirely today.

Baubo the II still for Solo Trombone
I took a sabbatical yesterday, but I've returned with a reworking of my trombone piece.

If you guys are lucking enough, you'll hear the final product on April 5th at the MSM Composition Forum. (Also that reminds me I really have to finish this and engrave it soon)

sax quartet mini
Hey friends!
I wrote a lil miniature for sax quartet! Not sure yet how I feel about it... I may attempt a piece with a smaller number of saxophones, just to get more comfortable with saxophone

Matador Part 1
Have I ever mentioned how much I hate Sibelius sounds? Honestly, that's a big part of why this piece has taken so long. The castanet sounds have been replaced by woodblocks, the baritone sounds like shit, but hey the piano's not too bad and the double bass has a nice grunt to it so who cares anyhow.
This is a setting of a poem, there are three more parts to this poem! Hoping to get them all done by the end of MoM...

Thanks friends :)

sometimes I have bad feelings
and I turn them into chords and put them with a beat and they become something else
